| It is with regret that we announce the death of our friend and faithful volunteer Harold Flavell. Sadly Harold passed away, aged 80, on the 2 April 2008. He and his wife Barbara came to the Isle of Man in the late 60s. After a short stay in Crosby they bought a house in Ballasalla where they lived ever since. Sadly Barbara died nearly twenty years ago. Harold joined the Supporters' Association and became the Distribution Officer for the magazine. When the Association acquired the shop in the Railway Station at Douglas in 1977, he did his first woodwork job for the Association in extending the shop. He later became Treasurer and continued in this role until 2006. When we started at Groudle, Harold built all the work boxes and sheds to keep the tools in. He built the red bogie coaches Nos.2 & 3 as well as the three replica four wheel coaches. Harold also built the first shop (which is now the Christmas mince pie/coffee stall), the booking office and the present shop at Lhen Coan as well as many other important jobs too numerous to mention. Visitors to the railway will remember Harold from the shop at Lhen Coan which he ran until the end of the 2007 summer season. Harold will be sadly missed by all of us at the railway, but there is comfort in knowing that his ashes were spread over the Headland Loopand and we know he will be constantly watching over us. |
