Polar Bear was one of two four wheeled battery electric locomotives ordered in November 1920 from Wingrove and Rogers Ltd and delivered in March 1921. The two electric locomotives were the first to be used on any British narrow gauge passenger railway. Contemporary postcards show Polar Bear carrying a dark red livery, with cream panels on the front and sides of the battery boxes and on the cab. The name was painted on the sides of the battery boxes, one word on each box.
